Poggio ai Laghi Wine Shop
Situated in the main square of Monteriggioni Castle, inside the medieval walls.
The Poggio ai Laghi estate is nestled in the historic Chianti region, near the medieval town of Monteriggioni. This land is renowned worldwide for its historic dedication to producing high-quality wines and the breathtaking beauty of its rolling hills, an emblem of Italian excellence.
Our winery is situated on a plateau, or poggio, located between two lakes that border the estate: Lago Oscuro and Lago di Sant’Antonio. The combination of the poggio and the two lakes creates a unique microclimate ideal for vine cultivation, with temperature variation enhancing the aromatic complexity of our wines and constant ventilation.
Sangiovese is the signature grape variety of our vineyards, complemented by other beloved varieties among wine lovers, including Merlot and Vermentino. From these vines, we craft wines of extraordinary elegance, some fresh and immediate, others rich and structured, capable of evolving beautifully over time.
At Poggio ai Laghi, we adhere to the most rigorous Italian traditions and the finest winemaking techniques to produce our Chianti Classico. This philosophy also guides the production of our Supertuscans, where the absence of DOCG restrictions grants us the creative freedom to craft truly exceptional wines.
Despite being in the heart of a land known for its red wines, we offer a unique selection of white Vermentino wines. In addition to our wines, we produce exquisite DOP balsamic vinegars, aged in our cellars in the small town of Modena, as well as top-quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Alongside meticulous enological research and dedicated vineyard work, every Poggio ai Laghi wine carries a sense of good fortune, inspired by the protective figures of Monteriggioni to whom they are dedicated: Donna Ava and her seven handmaids (Aranda, Lucilla, Arella, Oletta, Arania, Firmina, and Nina).
Many legends about them have been passed down through generations, recalling the generous protection they offered to both locals and travelers.
Francesco Sguazzi, Volterra-born entrepreneur and patron of Poggio ai Laghi, talks about his dream in Chianti:
“Poggio ai Laghi represents the opportunity to enhance the believe in what I am proud of: ‘made in Italy’. We consider italian wine to be an ambassador of our beautiful country to the world. Made in Italy represents quality and beauty unparalleled in wine culture. Quality of the grapes, the final product and the beauty that is expressed by our country from art to culture is recognized all over the world. Thanks to the art that is winemaking, our wines unite the history and identity of Monteriggioni and Chianti.”
Women are the common thread of Poggio ai Laghi: our logo features a female profile because Mother Earth, who grants us her fruits, is a woman. Donna Ava who founded the Benedictine monastery of Abbadia Isola and seven other churches, was a woman, just like all the mothers of the world. Beside the female profile, our logo also includes the tricolor symbol of Made in Italy and a half-heart, representing our deep love for this land.
